Understanding Oil Water Separators (OWS)

Oil water separators are key in many industries. They separate oil from water or gas mixtures. This keeps the environment safe and makes operations more efficient.

Definition and Purpose of OWS

An oil-water separator removes oil from water. It uses the difference in gravity between oil and water. This is vital for stopping pollution and following discharge laws.

Types of Oil Water Separators

There are two main kinds: oil-water and gas separators. Oil-water separators take out solid particles and water in oil. Gas separators remove gases in oil. They use methods like decompression, heating, or diffusion for separation.

Applications in Industry and Environment

OWS manufacturers make separators for many uses. In the maritime world, they stop oil from getting into oceans. Factories use them to clean wastewater before letting it go. Food producers count on them to keep their products safe.

By using these systems, industries can protect the environment, make products better, and follow the law.

Maine OWS manufacturers focus on custom solutions for different industrial needs. They know that one size doesn’t fit all in oil water separation. By offering custom solutions, they make sure each customer gets a separator that fits their specific needs.

Key Features of High-Quality Oil Water Separators

Top-tier oil water separators have key features that make them stand out. They perform well in separating oil and water, making them great for many industries.

Separation Efficiency and Performance

These separators are very efficient at separating oil and water. They can get discharge levels as low as 5 PPM. This is way better than what’s usually needed.

This high performance is key for keeping the environment safe. It helps protect our water resources.

Material Construction and Durability

Being durable is important for oil water separators. Many are made from heavy-gauge 304 stainless steel. This material lasts a long time, even in tough conditions.

They also have PVC coalescing media packs and adjustable oil skimmers. These add to their effectiveness and make them last longer.

Compliance with Environmental Regulations

Following environmental rules is a must for oil water separators. Top makers focus on meeting North American hydrocarbon discharge limits, which are set at 10 PPM. This ensures businesses can work without breaking the law.

It also helps avoid big fines and penalties. This focus on following the rules is good for everyone.

Selecting the Right Oil Water Separator for Your Needs

Choosing the right oil water separator (OWS) is important for your facility. You need to look at several key factors for the best performance and efficiency.

First, think about the separation capacity you need. This depends on how much oil and water you have to separate. Things like oil droplet size, flow patterns, and oil properties matter too.

Also, consider where you’ll put the OWS. Think about the space you have, temperature changes, and if it will face tough conditions. These things can affect how well the separator works and how long it lasts.

Flow rate is key when picking an OWS. A separator that can handle your facility’s highest flow rate works best. Make sure it can also handle more wastewater if your production grows.

By looking at these factors, you can pick an OWS that fits your needs and follows environmental rules. A good OWS choice means reliable performance and helps protect your operations and the environment.

Installation and Maintenance of Oil Water Separators

Oil water separators are key to protecting our environment. They need to be installed and maintained right for them to work well. Let’s look at the best ways to install and maintain these important systems, along with tips for fixing common problems.

Best Practices for OWS Installation

Installing an OWS correctly is crucial for its efficiency. Make sure it sits level for the right flow. Securely attach inlet and outlet pipes as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Double-check seals and gaskets to avoid leaks. Regular checks during setup can spot issues early.

Routine Maintenance Requirements

Keeping OWS in good shape is key. Check them monthly for any damage or wear. Clean the coalescing media every three months to keep them working well. Make sure oil levels are correct and remove any built-up oil. Keeping maintenance records helps track performance and spot trends. These steps help your OWS last longer and meet environmental standards.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with regular care, separators can face problems. If separation isn’t as good as before, check the filters or coalescing media for blockages. Bad smells might mean bacteria are growing; clean the system well. Seeing oil in the water means the separator isn’t working right. Look up your manufacturer’s guide for help with these and other issues.

These separators are crucial in storm water systems. They process runoff to meet the US EPA’s Clean Water Act standards. With effective oily water treatment, facilities protect the environment and dodge big fines.

ECOSORP

FOR EMULSIFIED AND DISSOLVED OIL: (ECOSORP BELOW 1 PPM)

The EcoSorp oil water separator is for use to obtain below 1 part per million (PPM) separation efficiencies. It is for use with free or PHYSICALLY EMULSIFIED AND DISSOLVED OIL by adsorption from water. This represents exceptionally clean separation. The EcoSorp requires filter / coalescing media cartridge replacement since it works through adsorption and the media becomes saturated over time (typically once a year). Recommended for use downstream of a Freytech Inc. above or below ground 5 PPM oil water separator to prolong its useful life. The media can absorb up to 22 lbs (10 kg) of oil. Units available with flow rates up to 100 gallons per minute (GPM) / 380 liters per minute (L/M). No electrical power requirements.

Typical Fields of Application

  • For emulsified and dissolved oil.

HIGH FLOW RATE OIL WATER SEPARATOR

Each XL Separator Panel can effectively treat oily water flow rates ranging from 320 GPM (20 l/s) to 640 GPM (40 l/s). Achieves 5 Part per Million (PPM) separation of free non-emulsified oil. By far, the most affordable method for large industrial oil-water separation since panels can be installed side by side like windowpanes in a submerged cross-wall in locally procured concrete or steel tanks. This unique solution represents a huge advantage over shipping conventional bulky separators since there is no limit to the flow rate that can be treated and the panels are washable and reusable. Maintenance is conducted from above ground making it safer, cleaner, quicker and of course, more affordable. Each panel requires 1 yard / 1 meter of submerged wall space. Optional polishing system available to also separate trace emulsified oil down to 0.1 PPM.

With the optional ADD Skimmer, the oil being separated by the XL Panels is mechanically and automatically collected 24/7 and drained by gravity to a separate receptacle. The skimmed oil will contain only 0.3% of water thus providing the operator with an outstanding 99.7 % concentration of pure used oil. This represents a significant advantage over other skimmers in that the operator no longer has to pay for the separated oil and the excess water to be removed from the separator by septic truck and shipped/ treated in a wastewater treatment plant. The operator can even sell or donate the pure separated oil since it is now possible to skim it free of water from the separator on site.
